TV watching and life span

A new research conducted in Australia found a strong connection between TV watching hours and death from cardiovascular disease, according to LA time report.

People who watched more than four hours a day showed an 80% greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 46% higher risk of all causes of death compared with those who watched fewer than two hours a day

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. David Dunstan said "What we showed was that irrespective of a person's exercise level, sitting for four or more hours watching television was linked to a significant increase in risk of death compared to watching lower amounts of TV."

Try to find how they found the causal relationship between TV hours and the increase in risk of death.
It is kind of scary to realize that TV would kill us eventually.
What do you think of this result?

  1. At first, I wonder why this doctor connect the death risk and TV watching time. I think people spend more time for using computer. In Japan, people often work more than 5 hours by using computer. So, I disagree that television become the cause of this death risk. The doctor should compare with the data of computer using people.
In any case, I think the less excersize increases the death risk as doctor said. We regularly need to move our body to keep healthy body. I strong recomend to watch exercize program or play exercizing game during thier watch screen.

  2. I think that there is at least a small correlation between Tv/ screen time and a cardiovascular death because if you are just sitting and staring at a screen then you arn't excercising and you most likely arn't doing activities that keep your heart strong. There for creating possible heart illness/ weight gain/ and maybe even an eating disorder. Which all can eventually lead to cardivascular illness or death.

  3. I don't know that this study is entirely accurate. I think that people who watch more than four hours of television a day are more likely to be overweight and that could be linked with the cardiovascular issues. There are many people in the U.S. and worldwide who work at computers all day long. They are probably not going to subject to the TV watchers same fate. Like previous posters, I think it is important to keep up an active lifestyle, and those who don't are obviously more prone to have heart disease. TV shouldn't be entirely blamed for their lack of motivation to exercise.

  4. I believe the reason that researchers got those statistics is by the rate of obese people. I dont believe TV can be a result of death unless your obese and sit and watch TV instead of exercising. Its not because of TV this is happening its the people who watch it, their decisions affect their health which results in death or cancer. Another thing is, is not everyone in the world just sits and watches TV some people exercise while watching TV its those who just sit there for pleasure and eat without even considering what exactly its doing to them. Overall TV should not even be a factor in cardiovascular disease because its the people in the united states that get it from just sitting around and not exercising just eating and relaxing not knowing its affecting their health.

  5. I believe, like others here, that its not that television is causing our ailments, but rather, our inactivity while watching it.
The longer an individual watches tv, the more likely they are to already be somewhat inactive. Active people dont sit around doing nothing, active people are moving and therefore healthier than their tv watching counterparts.
TV watching also goes hand in hand with mindlessly stuffing ones face with high calorie, high fat goodies. How many people have eaten a whole bowl of chips or buttery popcorn while watching the television, and not even realized what they are doing? I am willing to bet that number is pretty high.
Look at todays children vs. yesterdays...years ago there was no Internet, no gaming as it is today. Children also walked to school, or at least to the bus stop. Now it seems that children are being bussed within a few feet of their front doors. They also have more activities in which they are sitting down. Then we question why our chidren are overweight and unhealthy. We also dont understand why so much of our tax dollars are going to the transportation of students rather than the education...how about we all just wake up and smell the coffee?

  6. I don't believe that TV is going to cause someone to have a disease, however it does take part in people becoming more lazy. Exercise is a great way to prevent many diseases and TV seems to have a laziness effect on people. It is much easier to sit down for a few hours and watch your favorite show or movie rather than going out and jogging a couple of miles, especially if you're already used to that life style. What people don't understand is once you break that habbit and begin exercising instead of watching so much TV, it becomes easier to want to be active, which in the end makes you happier and healthier. Not to mention eating healthier, when people sit down and watch TV you begin to snack and it's usually not the healthiest foods. When you are excercising your body needs the healthier foods and you are more likely to want them rather than junk food. All in all it is ok to spend an hour or two in front of the TV, BUT you also need to get in your daily excercise as well!!

  7. I agree with the fact that people who watch tv for more than 4 hours a day will increase the risk of CVD because of lack of movement. TV also makes people bored, so they eat while they are watching it which in turn makes them gain weight. So the risk of CVD being higher in those sedentary people is most likely directly caused. BUT... the fact that tv increases the risks of ALL causes of death? No. TV does't give women breast cancer! Or causes them to get in a car accident and die. I think that was a fallacy in saying 4 hours of tv a day increases all death causes. There is NO way to prove that.

  8. I think that this is true and also false. I think that people who do watch four hours of TV on a regular basis, not including computer time are most likely one of the statistics for people who are at a greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease. However, I think that some people could still find time to watch four hours of TV and then exercise for four hours a day. (Give or take on exercise time frame.)
I think this study is inaccurate and that whom ever collected the data from a particular population needs to pick a much much more randomized population and not just a population that goes into a Dr.'s office with cardiovascular diseases and then is asked "how many hours of TV do you watch in a day?" That is biased.

  9. Is the person who is watching television for more than four hours a day already sick? I'm not sure but if you have four hours a day just to watch television then that person needs to get out and enjoy life; not watch it go by. There is numerous variances in this study, maybe the person is already sick or depressed. Or maybe it is just the sitting inside, watching the television and not working one's brain or body that increases weaknesses in the body. Is it really the television that is killing us, or are we killing ourselves by choosing to fill that void with television. I think this study is interesting. One study I conducted was about how ballroom dancing can actually help people live a longer healthier life. But in this study, one is exercising, breathing, listening to music, and usually dancing with another person cheek to cheek. These are all benefits. Compare this to just sitting and watching television and one will definitely get different results.

  10. This study is interesting and I think they have a good start. People who watch four or more hours of tv are most likely sitting around most of their day not his exercising. The odds that they are not eating as healthy either. However I don't think there is a direct link between tv and cardiovascular disease. They need to have a study that looks at more than people staring at a screen. I think their study would be better for the link between laziness and the tv, then tney can link laziness to cardiovascular disease. There is truth to this study but I think they are missing a step in their process.

  11. I would think that computers would be lumped into that study as well but then I started to think about it. Even though people spend hours and hours on their computers every day, some for work, some for pleasure, I realized that while on the computer your hands are busy typing as when you're watching TV our hands have nothing to do. When we watch TV we tend to be snacking and drinking. Most of us do not snack on nutritious food and drink water, we are eating chips and drinking beer or soda. I can see the link between heart disease and television usage.

  12. There are trade offs in everything that we do. Sitting in front of the TV or computer means you are not standing or doing any physical activity. TV will not kill us, being lazy is what will kill us.

  13. I'm sure this was just a simple study to see how sitting around doing very little compares to actually exercising and physical activity. Obviously the lack of exercise is bad for your health and surely risks of heart disease increase with every day you are not exercising. I don't think this is limited to just TV though, I think this includes sitting at a computer and even video games. This can easily be avoided by at least matching you amount of time sitting around with your amount of time exercising, if you aren't at least exercising more.

  14. I believe it. It is totally extreme and pushing the limit - but I can see the connections. It is proven that the more sedentary a lifestyle-the more you watch TV, the greater the chance of obesity and/or depression. Also, you are consuming 4 hours of advertising for junk foods and sugary drinks - not apples and carrots. The Mayo Clinic website says :
"Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of cardiovascular disease, and it's caused by an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight and smoking. All of these are major risk factors for developing atherosclerosis and, in turn, cardiovascular disease."

I think the Australian research claim was very bold. But I believe it.
