The risk of becoming depressed is 2.5 times higher for teenagers who are addicted to internet use than for those who aren't, according to a study led by Lawrence T. Lam of the School of Medicine, Sydney, in Australia. Some 6.2% of the participants — Chinese teens aged 13 to 18 — were found to be "pathological" internet users, says a report in Bloomberg Businessweek. So, anyone here "addicted" to the internet? The article seems to be focused on the effects on teens, so should teens be restricted from the internet like the restrictions on alcohol and tobacco?
A lot of the videos and articles on internet addiction use the same language and buzz words as discussions about other addictions. I am on the internet all the time, but I don't go through withdrawals if I miss my email, etc. for a couple days. I also don't get a "high" from getting on the internet again, like so many mention in their English papers and video assignments.
Here's a video about internet addiction in China. Do they have a more noticed problem because of their population, or is it because they're "not us" over here but they're "over there", so they're safe to talk about?
Wow........I think I need to open an Internet rehab center...charge people a ton of money to put them in a building with no Internet and occasionally make them exercise...brilliant! Overhead would be low...I wouldn't have to pay for Internet access...
ReplyDeleteI think I am high internet addicted. We can communicate easily with others by using internet. And, some people misunderstand they do real comversation. Acutually, people luck communication ability due to internet conversation. I think people use unique words or icons in computer, like :),lol, orz, and so on. People easy appear their feeling without using words. I think this is one of the cause poeple who can't become to communicate with others in the real world. We need to talk with oithers. The real conversation is very important for people.
ReplyDeleteI wonder about the movie of chinese training. How many people recover from their sympton after training. And, how many people can't recover and get intgernet addicted again. I'm not sure the movie say or not, but I think people more think this sympton seriously. I think this is one of the modern sickness.

Teens should not be restricted from the Internet like tobacco or alcohol. I think parents should from an early age give teens healthy restrictions. Encourage their children to read, and play outside. People can become addicted to the computer, but if we teach our children how to set boundaries then they can mature in healthy adults who aren't addicted to the Internet.

I spend far too much time online and I am definitely internet addicted. One thing I have noticed is that I spend much less time outdoors because I am inside, online. There are studies that show that Sunlight can be very important for energy, and for mental health. I wonder if that is the missing link? Maybe we should encourage these teens to get some outdoor time?
ReplyDeleteThe lack of personal interaction is what is concerning to me about the time spent on the internet. As stated above, sunlight is very important to human health and can greatly effect your mood. Time with people and freash air is a great start to getting these teens back to reality.

I really don't spend too much time on the internet. But I find when I need it most - I get frustrated when I don't have access to it. Like googling a recipe, or emailing a paper to a professor when we are snowed in, etc. I really think the internet is great in moderation. But I believe that some kids are addicts. I think its great they are raising awareness of this problem. And I agree with Alan. The socialization of teens is crucial to their future as well as ours. I think parents should monitor their childrens' consumption of internet - maybe a daily time limit? - to ensure they develop necessary personal interaction with others.
